Why does Horizon Hobby prefer to work with athletes who own their own assets and aren't dependent on major sponsors?

Answered in: How to get sponsored by Horizon Hobby

The Answer

Horizon looks for athletes who own their vehicles and have their own companies or self-funded programs because it reduces risk. For example, they work with Cody Wagner whose main sponsor Laser Nut is his own company, so that sponsor won't walk away. Casey Curry owns his truck and runs Curry Enterprises. If an athlete's race program is heavily dependent on another sponsor's funds, Horizon wants an even better relationship with that sponsor in case something goes south, since they have a 6-12 month sell-off period for products if relationships end.
