Why might a sponsor NOT want to add more athletes even if they have budget available?

Adding more athletes can actually dilute a brand's presence and make sponsorships less special or authentic. As Dave from Monster explained, if they already have winning athletes in a category, adding more doesn't enhance their position. Chris Meyer from Maxxis gave a concrete example: if they sponsor all the Pro 4 teams in Champ Off-Road, they have no competitors to beat and can't differentiate their product. The question sponsors ask is 'How are you going to enhance what we already have?' If you're approaching a brand that's already well-represented in your category, you need to offer something different - a new audience, different content style, or access to events/markets they don't currently reach.
